It was provided free of charge and could be downloaded and used with a generic "Yahoo ID" which also allowed access to other Yahoo! services, such as Yahoo! Mail. However, Yahoo Messenger was discontinued on July 17, 2018.
Messenger discontinued:
According to Yahoo’s announcement, the reason for ending the Yahoo Messenger service is that it is “focusing on building and introducing new, exciting communications tools that better fit consumer needs.”
Messenger was amazing with its services and features and worked with Yahoo email username and online/offline function for IDs. Everything was good. Yahoo provided its messenger to the world when few messengers were working in the world, and Yahoo was the first choice for audio and video calls. It only worked through computers and laptops back then.
Popular Messengers in 2000s:
Some of the popular messengers in the 2000s were Yahoo!, ICQ, AOL Instant Messenger (AIM), and MSN Messenger.
